Bartolome De Las Casas
A priest who spoke up for the natives; wrote a book which let to a proclamation from the king of Europe stating no enslaving natives - but then this led to African slaves

- Had 6 wives
- Was a strong Catholic - he was named Defender of the Faith by the Pope
- Decided to split with the church because he wanted a divorce
- His first wife was a Spanish woman, who could not bare him a son (Catherine)
Queen Elizabeth
- Was the daughter of Henry VIII
- Became queen after the death of her sister, Mary.
- Never married
- She attempted a settlement in N. America called Roanake, did not work
King James I
- Was the king of Scotland and became king of England in 1603 (this united both countries) - he was cousin to Queen Elizabeth
- He was Bisexual although he was married and had children (specifically liked little boys)
- Derived the English bible (thus king james bible)
- Main achievement - authorized a plantation in N. America called the Virginia Company (James Town)

- Became King after the death of James I

Roger Williams
- Was a Puritan Minister in Salem who started questing it (thought the puritans could not tell other to follow
- Was accused with teaching false opinions and banished from Salem
- Created a new colony out of Massachusetts - Rhode Island (set no laws as for religion, no tax for the church
- was given the name “Father of Religious Freedom”
Anne Huchinson
- Was from Massachusetts Bay (Puritan)
- Was put on trial for having different views and undermining the stability of the social system
- Moved to new york and years later massacred by Indians.
William Penn
- Was a Quaker (a religious group calm and hard working, was against war and fighting)
- Founder of Pennsylvania
- King of England gave him land in the new world where he brought other Quakers with him
Metacom “King Philip”
- Was the Indian Chief of the Wampanoag tribe (the son of Massasoit)
- Started the “king Philips War” or ‘metacomb war”; one of the biggest war thousands of people died and over 50 Puritan town destroyed.
- He was captured (actually brought in by one of his own kind - they wanted reward money)
- He was killed and his head put on display for 20 years in Plymouth 1676
- Wife and children were sold into slavery in Bermuda
King Charles II
- Parliament of England goes to France to get Charles II to reinstate a king again (he was the son of Charles I - beheaded king)
- Banned gambling and drinking (was punishable by death)
- Died in 1685
King James II
- Was the younger brother of Charles II
- He was over thrown (the people thought he was secretly Catholic b/c his wife was a strong Catholic)
- Ended up fleeing to France after his daughter Mary (from his first marriage) and her Husband landed on England to be the new ruler. - William was a dutch prince

- Was asked to rule England when King Jame’s Catholic wife gave birth to a son
- William was a dutch prince
- They both were Protestant
- They agreed to give up the royal rights to suspend laws, appoint courts, keep a standing army, and levy taxes except by Parliament’s consent.

Nathaniel Bacon
- Led the Freedmans in the Bacon Rebellion of 1676
- They burned James Town to the ground (even though it was already abandoned) thus ended the ROLE of Freedmans and resorting to only black slaves.
- He became ill and died a month later

- One of the foremost preachers of the first awakening
- Dramatically described the torments that awaited sinners in the afterlife
- His best speech “sinners in the hands of an angry god”
