High Rise Fire Suppression Flashcards
What are three groups of equipment used for high rise fire suppression?
- High rise bags
- Hose bundles
- Irons
If there is a problem with the FDC for a high rise and you need to make a direct connection to a standpipe, the standpipe on the floor where the high rise section begins must be used…
Other wise you won’t put water on the floors in the high rise section.
When is a fire pump required in a high rise building?
A fire pump is required as the height of the building increases past three floors.
What is considered Zone 2 in Calgary?
Zone 2 in a high rise is floors above the third floor to the 13th floor. This zone is supplied by a main riser for water.
What is considered Zone 3 in Calgary?
Zone 3 in Calgary is any building with 13 floors or more. These floors are supplied with another riser.
During initial firefighting operations, first, firefighters need to verify from the outside that the floor above the basement is there. If so, then they must understand that the most reliable way to determine if a floor is structurally sound is…
There are no reliable ways to determine if a floor is structurally sound other than a visual inspection.
This valve has a yoke on the outside with a threaded screw that opens and closes the gate inside the valve housing. The threaded portion of the screw is visible beyond the yoke only when the valve is open.
Outside screw and yoke valve
Has a hollow metal post that houses the valve stem. Attached to the valve stem is a movable plate with the words open or shut visible through a small glass window on the outside of the housing. When not in use, the operating handle locks to the valve housing.
Post indicator valve
This valve extends horizontally through a wall with the target and valve operating nut on the outside of the building.
Wall post indicator valve
This valve doesn’t use the words open and shut as others. Instead it uses a circular disk inside a flat plate on top of the valve housing.

When should sprinklers be shut off in a protected structure?
Once the fire has been brought under control, firefighters should stop the flow from any activated sprinklers to minimize water damage to the structure and its contents.
Who is responsible for turning utilities back on after fire suppression has been completed?
The building’s utility distributor. They need to determine if the building is safe by inspecting wiring and natural gas pipes and appliances.
The shut off is an in-line valve located on the owner supply side of the meter between the distribution system and the meter. When the valve is open, the tang is _______ with the pipe. To close the valve, use a spanner or pipe wrench to turn the valve _______ to the pipe.
In-line (open)
90 degrees (closed)
Once a fire pump is activated, how is it shut down?
Once activated, the fire pump will not automatically shut down. It will have to be manually shut off by a firefighter, a building operator, or a standpipe company.
If the fire pump is working and supplying adequate water volume and pressure for suppression activities, let it continue to run.
Connect the fire engine to the FDC line and hydrant, an standby in case the building fire pump fails. If the fire pump fails due to mechanical or electrical problems, the fire engine and the operator will need to supply water to the building for suppression activities.
