Emergency Rescue Procedures Flashcards

1
Q

Why is the emergency RIT procedure done?

A

The emergency RIT procedure is done to a downed firefighter to access their SCBA and FACEPIECE and to give supplemental air. This procedure is done using the CFD RIT Pack and would be employed by the safety team that is established at every fire incident.

Q

What are four distinct SCBA Emergencies?

A
  1. Straps, buckles, harness
  2. Face Piece
  3. Hoses and regulator
  4. Out of air and cylinder

Remember, if you cannot fix it in 30 seconds, it’s a mayday.

Q

On a RIT conversion, when would you check a downed firefighter’s air situation (check control module)?

A

Anytime that rescuing firefighter makes changes to downed firefighters air supply (technically 3)

Q

When rescuing a downed firefighter from a basement and placing the firefighter face down on a ladder, you would slightly rotate the head of the downed firefighter to their _______ shoulder to keep the regulator clear of the rungs and allow access to their bypass valve.

A

Right

Q

When placing a downed firefighter on a ladder to remove them from a basement, what rung would you place the downed firefighters feet on to make it easiest to remove them?

A

The bottom rung of the ladder. This accomplishes two things. It secures the firefighter to the ladder preventing them from sliding down and keeps their weight on the lower half of the ladder making it easier to lift the tips to the sill.

***Also note that if the window is too small to fit the fire fighter through, the SCBA can be removed and put on the rungs above the firefighters head.

Q

What is done before entry with the RIT pack?

A

Before entry, open the valve on the RIT cylinder. Ensure air flow by discharging air out the high pressure hose for 2-3 seconds. This is to make sure the cylinder valve and pressure reducer are working properly. Make sure sure the pressure gauge and pressure reducer remain visible and is identical to the cylinder pressure.

Q

Face piece replacement…
Putting a facepiece on a downed firefighter whose facepiece has come off either accidentally or intentionally because it has been compromised is a technically challenging skill.

What are the two methods to activate airflow through the regulator into the facepiece that has been put on a downed firefighter?

A

The bypass method

The plunger method

Q

S-Cut tool and super heated gear removal…
If a firefighter can exit from the environment that has caused the thermal insult, the stored heat contained in the PPE will likely increase severity of injury until the PPE can be removed.

What is the location of the S-Cut tool and who is the most trained to use it?

A

The S-Cut tool is located in all District Chief vans, FRP units and all rescues.

The FRP is the most trained member in the use of the S-Cut tool and should be present during this procedure. The FRP is highly trained to deal with this emergency and gives the firefighter the best chance of survival.

Q

Self rescue using a tool…
If on concrete floor, hit the floor a couple of times about 12” (1 foot) away from the wall to create a purchase point.
Place the tool at an angle into wall and use it as a step.

A

Note: If carpet is present, there is no need to make a purchase point in the concrete. Instead, place tool on floor, drive tool into wall, and use it as a step.

Q

Straps, buckles, and harness emergency…

This is the least serious of the four emergencies; however it can lead to serious problems is not addressed quickly.

A

If you experience any type of backplate or harness failures, exit the structure immediately. These problems cannot be fixed inside an IDLH environment and could result in the cylinder falling and pulling the low pressure hose.

Q

Facepiece emergency…

Any facepiece emergency is a life threatening emergency and needs to be addressed immediately.

A

In the event the straps become loose or break, use your left hand to tightly hold the facepiece and regulator to your face and exit the structure.

17
Q

Hose and regulator emergency…

With hose emergencies, you may not notice it right away. The hose could be kinked, leaking, cut or severed.

A

If the hose is cut, consider WHEEL BREATHING if losing too much air.

18
Q

How many are required when rescuing a downed firefighter from a basement and placing the firefighter on a ladder?

A

Rescuing an unconscious firefighter from a basement with access to a window demands a team of at least 3 firefighters, ideally 4.

19
Q

Escaping through an opening…

Typical walls are constructed with 16-inch centre studs.

A

The preferred methods are the FORWARD SWIM and the BACKWARD SWIM. The advantage of these methods is that breathing apparatus does not have to be loosened or removed.
