Part of your stomach pushes up through the opening (hiatus) into your chest and is next to your esophagus. Less common, more serious.
Paraoesophageal
Part of the stomach and the place where the stomach and esophagus meet slide up into the chest through the opening (hiatus). More common, less serious.
Sliding hernia
What causes hiatal hernia?
Weakness of diaphragmatic muscle
S/Sx of sliding hernia
-Heartburn / chest pain
-Regurgitation
-Dysphagia
-Belching (burping)
S/Sx of Paraoesophageal
-Feeling full after eating
-Breathlessness after eating
-Feeling of suffocation
-Chest pain that mimics angina
-Worsening of manifestations in a recumbent position
Meds for hiatal hernia
PPIs & antacids
Complications of hiatal hernia
-Volvulus
-Obstruction
-Strangulation- hernia is trapped and blood flow is restricted
-Iron deficiency anemia
What is a volvulus?
Loop of intestine wraps around itself. Causes abd distention & pain, bloody stools
Nursing safety priorities
-Most important role is health teaching
-Avoid eating late at night and foods that cause reflux.
-Sleep at night with head elevated 6 inches
-Remain upright for several hours after eating
-Avoid straining or excessive vigorous exercise
-Refrain from wearing tight clothing around the abdomen.
