bunion
S/Sx of bunions
-Pain w/ wearing shoes, associated w/ poor fitting shoes, narrow toes & high heels, Women > Men
-Custom fit shoes from podiatrist can help
A surgical procedure that moves toes back to the correct position. 6-12 weeks recovery. Pain and neurovascular status are important during recovery.
Bunionectomy
Dorsiflexion of any MTP joint with plantar flexion of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint next to it.
2nd toe may be affected, corns may develop, can’t walk or wear shoes
Hammertoe
Inflammation in the arch of the foot. Pain especially when weight bearing or getting out of bed. Common in middle/older adults & runners or obese patients.
Treatment- Ice, stretching, special shoes, NSAIDs, steroids
Plantar fasciitis
Induration and thickening of the skin caused by friction and pressure; painful conical mass
Tx: removal by podiatrist
Corn
Flat, poorly defined mass on the sole over a bony prominence caused by pressure
Tx: Padding and lanolin creams; overall good skin hygiene
Callus
Nail sliver penetration of the skin, causing inflammation
Tx: Removal of sliver by podiatrist; warm soaks; antibiotic ointment
Ingrown nail
Excess amounts of skin around the nail
Hypertonic ungual labium
