Ordinary World
Def: Where Hero starts out. Safe space, get exposition, makes it easier for the reader to emphasize with the hero
Moana: Island of Motunui, fascinated by ocean, expected to become the chief, loves her people, people love her
Call to Adventure
Def: Gets a call to action, threat to safety, family, or way of life. Disrupts ordinary world and makes hero have to leave on a quest
Moana: Ocean chooses Moana to find the heart and Ocean reaching out to her, island becoming dark, things dying (no more fish, coconuts, black vines)
Refusal of the Call
Def: This is the stage where the hero doubts themselves and whether or not they are up to the task at hand, they long to go back to the ordinary world
Moana: After trying to go beyond the reef Moana thinks she should just become Chief, Moana tells her grandma on her deathbed that they can’t do it
Meeting the Mentor
Def: When the Hero needs guidance, they meet a mentor figure who gives them the things they need to continue on
Moana: Moana’s grandmother encourages her to go to the ocean, Moana finds out her people were voyagers bc Grandma shows her cave, Tells her that the ocean chose her and urges her to go on her journey
Crossing the Threshold
Def: Hero is ready to act upon the call and begin the quest. They travel from the ordinary world to the world where their quest will take place, signifies commitment to the journey
Moana: Moana crosses the reef to find Maui despite her father’s wishes and knowing it will be dangerous
Tests, Allies and Enemies
Def: Hero is faced with a series of challenges that test them in many ways and force lead them to their ultimate goal, hero gains people they trust and people that dislike them, makes audeince identify with character more
Moana: Stuck in the storm first night, meets Maui, gets out of cave that Maui puts her in, fights the Kakamaura, convinces Maui to help her, get Maui’s hook from Tomotoa, goes to lolotai (roam of monsters)
Approach the Inmost Cave
Def: A place in the Hero’s story where there is lots of danger, final preparations to go into the unknown,
Moana: Moana and Maui learning how to sail practicing shape shifting, sailing to Teka
Ordeal
Def: Physically dangerous or deep crisis, facing a great fear or foe, hero has to die and be reborn, everything is on the line
Moana: Moana and Maui sail to Tekka and fight her but lose Maui leaves and tells her that the ocean chose wrong, Moana is about to give up but then another grandma pep talk
Reward (seizing the sword)
Def: After defeating the ennemy and overcoming a big challenge, Hero is transformed and comes out with a prize, this will help them return to the ordinary world
Moana: Moana decides to sail back to Tekka and swims to the bottom of the ocean to find the heart
The Road Back
Def: Reverse of call to Adventure, hero has one last challenge before return to the ordinary world, choose between personal objectives and higher cause
Moana: Sails back to Tekka with all of her new way finding skills
Resurrection
Def: The climax in which thee hero has an encounter with death and the consequences are far reaching, hero success and emerges “reborn”
Moana: Fighting Tekka again, realizes it’s Tefiti and replaces the heart, Tefiti restores the Islands to their state before people at home are saved
Return with the Elixir
Def: The hero returns a changed person, grown and learned, cause for celebration, resolution for all characters, things are not same as beginning
Moana: Maui gets hook and powers back, makes things right with Tekka, Moaa returns home with respect of parents, island sage, people become voyagers and Moana is a leader
All stages of cycle
Ordinary world, call to Adventure, refusal of call, meeting mentor, crossing threshold, tests Allies enemies, Inmost Cave, ordeal, reward (seizing sword, road back, resurrection, return with elxir
