Heresy of the Free Spirit Flashcards
Definition
The Heresy of the Free Spirit was a distinct heretical sect that held that it was possible to reach a level of spiritual perfection that makes sin impossible, that this state of perfection removes the need for prayers and fasts, and that in this state one no longer needs to adhere to Church Authority.
Ad Nostrum
In 1312, Clement V strengthened papal policy towards the Beguines with Ad Nostrum at the Council of Vienne. The Council was important in turning Beguine spirituality into an organised group – the Heresy of the Free Spirit.
Inquisition
Following the Council of Vienne, inquisitors began to examine the Beguines and the Beghards. The existence of the Heresy of the Free Spirit is debated, as many confessions were obtained through torture and often contained propositions taken word for word from the Council of Vienne’s decree.
Gordon Leff’s View
Gordon Leff viewed the Heresy of the Free Spirit as a distinct heretical sect distinguished by its ‘lechery, hypocrisy, and megalomania’ and racy sex.
Robert Lerner’s View
Robert Lerner demonstrated that many of the confessions that lead to belief in the Heresy of the Free Spirit’s existence were obtained under torture.
