Heat and Temperature Flashcards
What is temperature?
Temperature is a measure of how hot or cold an object is. It is determined by the average kinetic energy particles open the object.
What is temperature measured in?
Degrees Celsius (°C)
Freezing point of pure water
0°C (at sea level)
Boiling point of pure water
100°C (at sea level
What is heat?
Heat is the transfer of energy that takes place between objects of different temperatures. Heat flows from a warmer area to a colder area.
Heat cup of coffee
This cup of coffee will cool down because it is giving out heat energy into the surroundings
Heat drink
This drink (taken out of the fridge) will warm up because it is taking in heat energy from the surroundings.
Heat energy and examples
How much heat energy an object has depends on it’s temperature and how much of it there is. The sparkler is at a higher temperature than the bath, but the bath is much heavier, so it has more heat energy.
Place a finger a finger on a metal object and a finger of your other hand on a wooden object
The houses heating system governs the temperature of of our rooms. The radiators are metal. Particles in the air surround us and therefore the temperature is even throughout.
What feels colder the metal object or the wooden object?
The metal object
What does this teach you about your perception of temperature?
The temperature of the wooden spoon and the metal spoon are the same. It tells us that our perception of temperature is often inaccurate. Metal objects often feel colder than other objects at the same temperature because metal is a good thermal conductor. Which means it easily transfers heat from a colder object or absorbs heat from a warmer object.
A cake is taken from the oven
What happens to the cake?
The cake cools down; the heat of the cake is released into the air.
A cake is taken from the oven
What happens to the room?
The room slightly heats up because of the heat being transferred from the cake to the surroundings.
Ice cream is taken from the fridge
What happens to the ice cream?
The ice cream warms up and melts because of the heat taken in from the surroundings.

What happens to the room?
The room slightly cools down because of the heat transferred to the ice cream.
