Christmas kecture Energy Extra Flashcards
Power
How fast energy is transferred
Do electrons carry charge?
Yes
Faraday Cage
(Named after Michael Faraday) it is an enclosure used to block electromagnetic fields
Modern energy generators:
Wind power, microbial power, wee energy(converts bacteria to energy), foot (electromagnetic)
How do big power stations generate electricity?
By splitting apart atoms
What percentage of UK’s energy do fossil fuels account for?
50%
How is electricity generated? (basic)
Energy gets converted into heat, heat into motion, motion into electricity
What do fossil fuels release and contribute to?
Fossil fuels release carbon dioxide and contribute to global warming
Energy (equation by Albert Einstein)
Energy=p = mass x speed of light squared (E = mc squared)
How do you get energy (hint: mentions atoms)
Atoms need to either get split or fused
Hydrogen bomb
The most destructive weapon in the world
Nuclear fusion
Have to get fuel extremely hot (10x centre of sun), this makes the fuel energetic causing charge particles (ions, electrons) to separate.
Plasma
Fourth state of matter
Very energetic gas where ion and electrons have separated
What can charged plasma be controlled by?
A magnetic field
Where is a nuclear fusion reactor being built?
In the South of France
Nuclear Fusion
Unlimited quantities of electricity
Small amount of carbon dioxide released
Solar panels
Converts the suns energy into electricity
What will next generation solar panels be made of and how would it help?
Copper, indium, gallium and selenium making it more flexible
What is sunlight made up of
Made up of a spectrum of colours which have different energy levels, red has the least amount of energy
Future planes
Plane powered by energy from the sun
Is solar power likely to give us all the energy we will need in the future?
Solar power is unlikely to give us all the energy we need in the UK because of the limited land space and it is a challenge in Winter months, especially in Northern Europe.
