Chemical Reactions Flashcards
Chemical reaction
A change in which atoms are rearranged to make new substances
Balanced symbol equation
In a balanced symbol equation, chemical formulae represent the reactants and products. The relative amount of reactants and products are shown.
Combustion
A chemical reaction in which a substance reacts quickly with oxygen and gives out light and heat.
Conservation of mass
In a chemical reaction, the total mass of reactants is equal to the total mass of products. Mass is conserved in chemical reactions and physical changes.
Decomposition
A chemical reaction in which a compound breaks down to form simpler compounds and/or elements.
Displacement
When a metal takes the place of a less reactive metal in a compound.
Endothermic reaction
Takes energy from the surroundings
Exothermic reaction
Releases energy to the surroundings
Fuel
A material that is burnt for energy (usually heat)
Hazard
A possible source of danger
Neutralisation
When an acid and base (alkali) react together to changing the pH of a mixtures
Oxidation
A chemical reaction in which substances react with oxygen to form oxides
Physical change
A change that is reversible, in which new substances are not made. The atoms are not rearranged so no new products are produced. Examples of physical change include changes of stat and dissolving.
Signs of chemical reactions
