Heart Diseases Flashcards
Atherosclerosis
Plaque build up in arteries obstructing blood flow
Ischemia
Loss of oxygen supply / poor perfusion, muscles wont get oxygen and would fail to support heart to pump good
Coronary artery disease
Plaque build up in coronary arteries leading to ischemia to the heart muscles
Heart failure
When heart is not functioning adequately for the body / heart and providing efficiently
Angina Pectoris
Sharp chest pain due to artery blockage and poor perfusion
Thromboembolism
Blood clot formation due to plaque rupturing and clotting factors attaching to it leading to blood flow obstruction leading to heart tissue death called infarction
Heart attack
Heart tissue dying also called Myocardial infarction
Cardiac arrest
Heart stops working
Stenosis
Narrowing of blood vessels, restricts blood supply (ischemia )
Thrombus
Clot formation at the plaque site
Thrombus
Clot formation at the plaque site
Embolus / Emboli
Floating clots in blood and lodge anywhere
Thromboembolus
Clot branched off the thrombus and act like embolus
Thromboembolism
Thromboembolus blocking a vessel and obstructing blood flow
Risk factors of coronary artery disease
Age - male - 45 years, female - 55 years
Family history, Ethnicity, high levels of LDL (deposits readily in walls and form plaques), high triglyceride / fats level, hypertension, smoking, diabetes, lifestyle, drug abuse (causes vasospasm)
