Heart Flashcards
what are the layers of the heart?
- pericardium
- epicardium
- myocardium
- endocardium
what is the structure of pericardium?
single layer of flattened / squamous mesothelial cells
what are the types of pericardium?
viseral - outer surface
parietal - inner surface
what does the epicardium contain?
- white adipose connective tissue
- vessels (incl. coronary arteries)
- nerves
what is the thickest layer of the heart?
myocardium
what is the myocardium?
specialised cardiac muscle
describe the histological appearance of the myocardium
- striated
- single central nucleus
- branching
- intercalated discs
what are intercalated discs?
specialised connections between myocytes
- connect actin filaments of adjacent myocytes
what do intercalated discs contain?
- gap junctions
- adhering junctions
- desmosomes
what is the endomysium?
loose fibrous connective tissue between muscle fibres in the myocardium
- may contain very small number of lymphocytesq
where are the largest myocytes in the heart found?
wall of the left ventricle.
why are atrial myocytes smaller than ventricle myocytes?
pump up against a much lower pressure
what endocrine hormone does the heart secrete?
ANP
- secretes by atria
where is the conducting system of the heart initiated?
SA node
where are purkinje fibres found?
ventricles
