Health Protection(prevention)
- Motivated by the desire to avoid illness
ex. vaccines, masks, stay home when ill
Primary Prevention
-Activities designed to prevent/ slow the onset of disease
-Prevent/stop illness before it begins
ex. vaccines, healthy diet, sunscreen, safety laws
Secondary Prevention
-Screening activities and education for detecting illness in the early stages
- Find/catch
ex. check vitals, physicals, screenings, lab work
Tertiary Prevention
-Stopping the disease from progressing and returning the client to a pre-illness phase
ex. surgery, therapies, medication
Pender’s Model
-Look at a person individually and unique ways to influence health for better/worse
-Identifies 3 groups of variables that affect health promotion
Transtheoretical Model of Change
-Prochaska & DiClemente, 1982
-view change as a necessary component of health promotion and health protection
-Six phases/stages of change
Wheel of Wellness
-Dimensions of health are like spokes in a wheel
-If one spoke is weak makes the wheel unbalanced and impacts all dimensions
-Determine where weakness is and strengthen it
-6 stages: Mental, Emotional, Social/family, Occupational, Spiritual, & Physical
3 variables that affect health promotion
1.) Individual characteristics and experience(personal)
2.) Behavior-specific cognitions and affect
3.) Behavioral outcomes
6 phases of change(model of change)
1.) Precontemplation
2.) Contemplation
3.) Preparation
4.) Action
5.) Maintenance
6.) Termination
Precontemplation Phase
-Patients have no intention to change behaviors in the near future
-No effort change
Contemplation Phase
-Patients are seriously thinking about overcoming a problem but have not made a commitment to action
-Start thinking, no commitment
Preparation Phase
-Individuals are intending to take action soon and are reporting small behavior changes
-How you could change, what can you do
Action Phase
-Plan is implemented, requires considerable commitment of time and energy
-Doing plan
Maintenance Phase
-Individuals working to prevent relapse, growing more confident that change can be sustained
Termination Phase
-Person entering this stage has completed the maintenance, changed behaviors are not in danger of relapse
-Second nature> made change
