Ch. 8 Introduction to Nursing Theory Flashcards
Theory helps nurses to:
- Find meaning in our experiences
- Organize our thinking around an idea (notice trends)
- Develop new ideas
Nursing Metaparadigm Concepts
Person, Nursing, Environment, & Health
Practice
The nurse will come up with an idea or a question after noticing trends
Research
The nurse conducts research based on the question or idea they developed
Theory
If the data supports the nurses’ idea, a theory can be developed, and it is an organized set and specific
Paradigm
World view(see things), broad
Framework
Concepts that form a whole or pattern, broader than theory
Model
Symbolic representation
Metaparadigm
- Concepts that identify the domain of a discipline, All the concepts are addressed by these four concepts
- Nursing, person, health, environment
- Broad/overarching
Purpose of nursing metaparadigm
- Agreement> same goals,
- creates parameter
- unify a common worldview
- provides guidance for nursing theory
Person
recipient/ patient (ind., groups)
Nursing
Actions to patients
Environment
Surrounding the patient
Health
Wellbeing
Ways nurses use theory
Nursing practice> guide to access/ choose treatment
Education> guide planning curriculum
Research> Guide researchers to problems and ask questions
Building blocks of theory
Assumptions, phenomena, concepts, definitions, and statements
4 core concepts of nursing metaparadigm
Nursing, person, health, and environment
Florence Nightingale
- served in Crimean war
- Collected data and research> ahead of her time
- Made many revolutionary solutions> Decreased Death Rate, these developed her nursing theories
Florence Nightingale Nursing Theories
- The physical environment has healing properties
- Persons are in relationship with environment
- If environment is out of balance, patients must use their own energy to counter these environmental issues
- Health of the home and community are critical components for the patient
Nursing Metaparadigm and Florence Nightingale
Environment: Foundational component, external conditions and forces
Person: the patient, environment has to be in good condition for patient to heal correctly
Health: improve nutrition, lower disease/illness, health is focus of the nurse
Nursing: Role of the nurse, nursing is distinct from medicine
What is the Core Concept in Florence Nightingale’s Theory
ENVIRONMENT
Novice to Expert Theory
- Dr Patricia Benner
- How nurses grow with clinicals to becoming a real nurse
- Develop intuition/stages(novice, beginner, competence, proficient, expert)
- Focused on educational side of nursing
Cultural Care Diversity and Universality Theory (Transcultural)
- Dr. Madeleine Leininger
- Focused on human caring with in culture
- Culture serves as foundation of care
- Health is culturally different between cultures
Science of Human Caring
- Dr. Jean Watson
- Caring> valuable attribute
- Caring moment> be present to provide comfort/healing
