-The integrated pattern of thoughts, communications, actions, customs, beliefs, values, and institutions associated, wholly or partially, with racial, ethnic, or linguistic groups, as well as with religious, spiritual biological, geographic, or sociological characteristics
-Universal>everyone
How phenomena of culture may affect nursing care needs
-The USA is a multicultural society
-We are expected to become a majority-minority nation by 2044
-Nursing care for the dominant culture group may be ineffective and inappropriate for people in minority cultures
-Cultural beliefs and practices affect health behaviors
-Understanding patient’s perceptions and context is necessary for optimal care
Ethnicity
-Refers to groups whose members share a common social and cultural heritage that is passed down from generation to generation
-Have some characteristics in common not shared or understood by outsiders
Race
-Strictly related to biology
-Grouping of people based on biological factors
Religion in culturally appropriate care
People within an entire group may share the same religion(but not always)
Ethnocentrism
Tendency to think your own group is superior to others and view behaviors and beliefs that differ greatly from your own as somehow wrong, strange, or enlightened
