health behaviour change Flashcards
what are the 5 best actions to improving wellbeing and preventing illness
never smoke, healthy weight, moderate to vigourous exercise, healthy diet, moderate alcohol consumption
whats the habit loop
cue routine reward
if we want to change a habit what parts of habit loop should we target
target the cue and routine. so potentially remove a cue to do something or change the cue. or change the routine we do when we see a certain cue
what do we do if we want to develop habit
add a clear incentivising reward to the routine.
what are the 4 main barriers to change
enjoyment of the poor behaviours, no immediate adverse effects of the poor behaviours, the amount of effort needed to change the health behaviours, fear which leads to denial that there is a problem with the behaviour
what are the 6 stages of the transtheoretical model of change
precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, relapse
define the 6 stages of the transtheoretical model of change
precontemplation: no desire to change, nothing will elicit this change
contemplation starting to shift towards the idea of changed, but this idea needs to be encouraged
preparation: preparing mechanisms to go about the behaviour change
action - doing the action of changing the cue, routine or reward
maintenance: keeping the habit ongoing
relapse: this can occur at any time. its due to environmental factors which cause us to go backwards.
define a barrier
something which prevents us from changing a health behaviour. can be beliefs or personal desires
