define anorexia nervosa
persistent restriction of energy intake leading to significantly low body weight for sex, ethnicity and age.
this issue stems from intense fear of gaining weight, thus engaging in behaviour that interferes with weight gain.
define binge eating
eating in a discrete period of time, an amount of food which is larger than most people would eat in a similar time period
a sense of lack of control of over eating during a time period - a feeling that one cannot stop eating or control how much they are eating
what is bulimia nervosa
periods of binge eating along side recurrent inappropriate compensatory behaviours of weight, self induced vomiting, taking laxatives, excessive exercise
this must happen at least once a week for three months
what is binge eating disorder
recurrent episodes of binge eating associated with three or more of the following: eating much more rapidly than normal or until comfortably full, eating large amounts of food when not hungry, eating along because of embarrassment over how much you eat, feeling guilty or disgusted after eating.
no compensatory behaviours but it is once a week for 3 months
what are some sociocultural and family factors into eating disorders?
exposure to the ideal body, beauty standards of specific places, these ideals can lead to dissatisfaction of oneself and then diet which can lead to ED. family controlling food, mother daughter conflict
what are some individual factors in ED
trauma like bullying, abuse, critisised about weight, negative emotions like low mood anxiety and low self esteem. general body dissatisfaction. perfectionism, controlling obsession, if life is lost then eating can restore this.
impacts of anorexia physically
low bone density, cardiorespiratory diseases, abnormal renal and liver function, electrolyte disturbance, hair loss, languo - thickening of body hair
anorexia nervosa imoacts mentally
severe cognitive dysfunction, impact on role, socal disruption as people think weird of you
bulimia nervosa impacts physically and socially
dental issues from the vomiting, electrolyte imbalances impact on role is not too bad as the disorder may not be apparent for years
binge eating disorder impacts
physically it is the same as obesity, weight gain and such
treatment principals for eating disorders
psychoeducation about the disorder and its effects on behaviour and physically
medical monitoring of electrolytes and cardiac function and such
target underlying issues of why the ED
restraint and relapse prevention
