all these things must be present and have 5 of the mood symptoms, whys it 5. that feels arbitrary.
sadness vs major depressive disorder
healthy emotional reaction, maybe a sign of loss only lasting a short period normally, no impact on a persons ability to function productively, is realistic in thought pattern.
MDD involves hopeless and helpless feelings, is negatively biased towards negative thoughts, involves a complex pattern of physiological and psychological symptoms
grief vs MDD
grief is feeling empty and loss, the dysphoria will decrease over days and weeks, often the dysphoria occurs in waves when prompted by reminders, may also be accompanied by happy memories, self derogatory thoughts are related to the dead
MDD: persistent depressed mood, inability to anticipate hapiness or pleasure, mood is not tied to specific preoccupations, suicidal thoughts because of feeling worthless or undeserving of life.
