Headaches Flashcards
What is the first cranial nerve
olfactory
what is the main function of the limbic system
helps regulate emotion, hunger ques, and learning/memory
*tracts memory pathways
What is the second cranial nerve
optic
What is the third cranial nerve
oculomotor
What is the function of the oculomotor nerve
lifts eyelid
constricts iris and ciliary body
proprioception of EOM
What is the 4th cranial nerve
trochlear
What is the function of the trochlear nerve
superior oblique EOM
-down and out
What is the 5th cranial nerve
Trigeminal
What is the function of the abducens
helps with lateral eye movement
What is the 6th cranial nerve
abducens
What is the function of the trigeminal nerve
helps with 3 regions of sensation
helps w/ moving mouth & chewing
What is the 7th cranial nerve
facial nerve
What is the function of the facial nerve
Expression and lacrimal/salivary glands
What is the 8th cranial nerve
Vestibulocochlear
What is the function of the vestibulocochlear nerve
Hearing
What is the 9th cranial nerve
Glossopharyngeal
What is the function of the glossopharyngeal nerve
helps with speech and cough
What is the 10th cranial nerve
vagus
What is the 11th cranial nerve
accessory
What is the function of the accessory nerve
innervates muscles of pharynx/larynx
sensation/motor to sternocleidomastoid
What is the 12th cranial nerve
Hypoglossal
When do you see meningeal irritation
meningitis (nucal rigidity)
What is transduction
Damage to tissue/ exposure to free nerve ending with an irritant which is converted into electrophysiologic activity and ultimately activates the nociceptors
What is transmission
Stimulus of nociceptors triggers activation of dorsal horn and is then transferred to the post central gyrus via limbic system
