Head Anatomy Flashcards
The right lymphatic duct enters the venous system where?
At the junction between the right subclavian vein and the right internal jugular vein
The thoracic duct enters the venous system where?
At the junction between the left subclavian vein and the internal jugular vein
List the paranasal sinuses
frontal, maxillary, ethmoid, and sphenoid
What sinuses drain into the middle and superior nasal meatuses?
frontal, maxillary, and ethmoid
Where does the sphenoid sinus drain?
Into the sphenoethmoid recess
Where in the nasal cavity does the nasolacrimal duct open?
The inferior nasal meatus
What are the three regions of the pharynx?
Nasopharynx, oropharynx, and the laryngopharynx
What are the borders of the nasopharynx?
The region above the soft palate and posterior to the nasal cavities
What are the borders of the oropharynx?
The region between the soft palate and epiglottis
What are the borders of the laryngopharynx?
The region between the epiglottis and the esophagus
What are the three major pairs of salivary glands?
parotid, submandibular, and sublingual
Where is the opening of the parotid duct?
Opposite the second molar
Where is the opening of the submandibular duct?
Opens on either side of the frenulum of the tongue
Where is the sublingual duct opening?
Opens around the frenulum of tongue region
Sensory innervation to the anterior 2/3 of the tongue?
V3 (Trigeminal, 5)
Sensory innervation to the posterior 1/3 of the tongue?
glossopharyngeal (9)
Tastebuds on the anterior 2/3 are innervated by?
Facial (7)
Motor innervation of the tongue?
Hypoglossal (12)
Three major salivary glands?
Parotid, submandibular, and sublingual
What CN innervates the uvula?
vagus (10)
note: the deviation will be to the opposite side of the lesion (i.e. right lesion will present with uvula deviating to the left)
What opening is found in the ethmoid bulla?
middle ethmoid air cells
What openings are found in the hiatus semilunaris of the middle meatus?
Frontal sinus, maxillary sinus, and anterior ethmoid air cells
What opening is in the inferior meatus?
nasolacrimal duct
What opening is in the superior meatus?
Posterior ethmoid air cells
What opens into the sphenoethmoidal recess?
Sphenoid sinuses
What CN are associated with the gag reflex?
9 & 10 (glossopharyngeal & vagus)
What arteries are associated with Kisselbach’s/Little’s area?
Five branches of the three major arteries (facial, maxillary, and ophthalmic) anastomose
What is the sensory innervation for the nasopharynx and the oropharynx?
CN 9 (glossopharyngeal)
What is the sensory innervation for the laryngopharynx?
CN 10 (vagus)
How many layers compose the ear drum?
Three
