Hand and wrist anatomy 2 Flashcards
what are tendon pulleys
tendons that run down our fingers are held in place by a series of ligaments, that arch over the tendons forming a “tunnel-like” sheath
tendon pulleys prevent
“bowstringing” during flexion of the finger (they are stabilizers)
what is tenosynovium
slippery coating to pulleys that surrounds the tendons and keeps the tendons moving smoothly under the ligaments when the hand grasps objects.
annular pulleys prevent
palmar tendon dislocations
which annular pulleys are most commonly affected
A2 and A4
are cruciform pulleys seen well on ultrasound
no
collateral ligaments of the fingers prevent
abnormal sideways bending
median nerve can easily be seen in
carpal tunnel and in cubital fossa of elbow
ulnar nerve can be seen where
medially in the wrist and posteriorly in the elbow
radial nerve can be seen where
wrist and anterolaterally in elbow
difficult to see
what is the flexor retinaculum
A strong fibrous band crossing the front of the carpus and binding down the flexor tendons of the digits and the tendon of the radial flexor muscle of the wrist.
contents of the guyon tunnel
ulnar nerve
ulnar artery
borders of the guyon tunnel (3)
transverse carpal ligament/flexor retinaculum: posterior
superficial palmar ligament : anterior
Pisiform and Hamate: medially
is there communication between median nerve and ulnar nerve
yeees through their branches
radial nerve location
radial aspect of wrist
crosses the 1st extensor compartment to reach the dorsal wrist
