Haemostasis Flashcards
What is primary haemostasis
Formation of the platelet plug
What is secondary haemostasis
Formation of the fibrin clot
How are platelets formed- which cell do they bud from?
Platelets are formed in the bone marrow by budding from megakaryocytes
Lifespan of platelets?
7-10 days
What does the endothelium release when it becomes damages?
Von willebrand factor and other proteins
-platelets have receptors =adhesion at the site of injury
Platelets bind to the site of injury and then what?
They release chemicals which then cause aggregation of platelets
What activates plasminogen
Tissue plasminogen activator converts plasminogen to plasmin
What does plasmin do?
Breaks down fibrin to FDPs (fibrin degeneration products)
Screening tests for fibrin clot formation
- prothrombin time
- activated partial thromboplastin time
Thrombophilia means patients are more likely to develop ______
Venous thromboembolism!! Pulmonary embolism!!!
Name a serine protease inhibitor
Anti-thrombin III (naturally occuring anticoagulant)
