Haematology III Flashcards
How do red blood cells differ from white blood cells?
WBC are nucleated in contrast to RBC
What are whiteblood cells also known as? e.g RBC = Erythrocytes
LEUKOCYTES
WBC fucntion?
- defense vs pathogens
- toxin and waste removal
- remove damaged cells
What are the 4 main characteristics of WBC?
- Phagocytosis
- Amoeboid movement
- attracted towards specific chemical stimuli
- EXTRAVASATION (migrates out of blood stream)
What is amoeboid movement?
- is how white blood cell move by cytoplasmic projection(crawling like movement)
Which WBC are phagocytes?
Neutrophils, Eosinophils, Monocytes
What are the 5 WBC in the body?
Neutrophils
Lympocytes
Monocytes
Eosonophils
Basophils
(never let monkey eat banana)
What is the healthy Wbc count?
4-11 x 10^9 (per L of blood)
What is the healthy Wbc count?
4-11 x 10^9 (per L of blood)
In what two categories do WBC subdivide in?
- Granulocytes
- Agranulocytes
Which WBC are granulocytes?
Neutrophils
Basophils
Eosinophils
Which WBC are Agranulocytes?
Lymphocytes
Monocytes
What is the RBC : Platelets : WBC ratio?
700 : 40 : 1
What is the percentage composition of each type of WBC?
N = 50-70%
L = 20-30%
M = 2-10 %
E = 2-4 %
B = <1%
What is the lobe structure of WBC? (Structure)
- N = 2-5 lobes
- L = Single round nucleus
- M = Horshoe shaped nucleus
- E = bilobed/ 2 lobes
- B = Bilobed S-shaped
