ANATOMY of CIRCULATION Flashcards
What carries blood AWAY from the HEART?
Arteries
What carries blood TOWARDS the HEART?
VEINS
What is the AXILLARY FOSSA?
ARMPIT
what is the POLITEAL FOSSA?
BACK of the knee
What is the ILIUM?
Bone that is part of the hip
are PULMUNARY arteries oxy or deoxy?
deoxygenated
are PULMONARY vein oxy or deoxy?
oxygenated
How does portal CIRCULATION differ from systemic circulation?
- Blood draining from a capillary passes to from a vain to ANOTHER CAPILLARY BED before returning to the heart
- Portal Circulation contains portal vessels which is like an extra capillary bed:
Artery - capillary - PORTAL VESSELS - capillary - Veins
Whereas systemic circulation consists of :
Artery - capillary - Vein
What is bypassed in foetal circulation?
Liver, Lungs and GI tracts as these systems are not sufficiently developed.
What are the functions of the lymphatic system?
- Involved in the body defence mechanisms
- Provides a mechanism for the drainage of interstitial fluid
Describe how the lymphatic system absorbs excess interstitial fluid? (include percentages)
- Fluid leaves at arteriole end
- 85 % of fluid reabsorbed at venous end
- 15% not taken back, drains into lymphatic system
What is the excess interstitial fluid that drains into lymphatic system called?
Lymph
Describe the pathway of lymphatic drainage.
- Lymphatic capillaries
- lymphatic vessels
- lymphatic node
- lymphatic TRUNK
- THORACIC DUCT/LYMPHATIC DUCT
What is the function of the Lymph NODES?
- Filter lymph and trap foreign particles
- Contain a lot of MACROPHAGES which recognise foreign particles and present it to lymphocytes
- lymphocytes kill foreign particles
What does the right side head, neck thorax and upper limb drain into in terms of lymphatic return?
- Lymphatic duct
- then into right subclavian vein
