A
  • Must be no greater than 24 weeks gestation
  • Considered >24 wks if life of mother at risk
  • Consider in cases where > risk to existing children
  • Consider when physical and mental health of mother at risk
  • Consider if child likely to be born with severe mental/physical issues

Methods used?

A

Gestation <9weeks

  • Mifepristone
  • 48 hours after mifepristone - give prostaglandin (misoprostol)-stimulates uterine wall

Gestation<13weeks

  • Surgical dilation and vacuum aspiration

Gestation - 15 weeks

  • Surgical dilation and evacuation

General complication:

  • Those of GA
  • Haemorrhage
  • Infection
  • Retained products of conception
  • Psychiatric complications

Specific complications:

  • Trauma to the genital tract
  • Asherman’s syndrome - Adhesions/fibrosis of endometrium
  • Perforation of pelvic organs
