Guidance and Feedback Flashcards
Name the 4 types of guidance
Visual
Verbal
Manual
Mechanical
Describe visual guidance
When someone demonstrates how to do a skill or shows you a video so you can see it
Describe verbal guidance
Where you tell someone what to do or how to do it
Describe manual guidance
Where a coach physically supports you to help perform a skill e.g, a coach supporting a gymnast in a somersault
Describe mechanical guidance
Use of a piece of equipment to help learn a skills e.g. Armbands to help you swim or a harness in trampolining to help lean to somersault
Describe the advantages of visual guidance
It’s good for beginners because they can visualise the correct movement skills
Easier to remember and to form a technical model to copy
Quick and effective
Describe the disadvantages of visual guidance
If the demonstrations are incorrect then the wrong movement patterns are learned
It’s difficult to get the feel or kinaesthetic sense of the skill
It may be too complicated for effective understanding
Describe the advantages of verbal guidance
It can be given immediately
It’s good for fine tuning a skill or developing skilled movements
It can be motivating and can, along with visual, develop a better understanding of the skill
Describe the disadvantages of verbal guidance
Might be the wrong information given
Can lead to misunderstanding/confusion
Cannot create a mental picture of movement requirements
Describe the advantages of manual/mechanical guidance
They can reduce fear in dangerous situations
They can be much safer for the performer and raise confidence levels
Hey can give some idea of the feel of (kinaesthesia) of the movement
Describe the disadvantages of manual and mechanical guidance
They can give an unrealistic feeling of the motion
The performer can become over-reliant on support and therefore does not learn to perform themselves
It can be dangerous if the mechanical guidance malfunctions or physical guidance is weak or inappropriate
The kinaesthetic sense of cycling with stabilisers or swimming with a bands is different to not using them so you don’t get the true sense of the skill
Identify the 6 types of feedback
Intrinsic Extrinsic Knowledge of performance Knowledge of results Positive Negative
Describe intrinsic feedback
Continuous feedback that comes from within the performer
E.g, the ‘feel’ of the skill
Describe extrinsic feedback
Feedback that comes from external sources
E.g. A coach telling you what was good about a performance or what you need to do to improve
Describe the knowledge of performance method of feedback
This is information about how well the movement is being executed
E.g. Did you tuck tight enough in a somersault
