How does gender affect participation in sports?
Men are more likely than women to participate in sports (51% compared to 26%). This is partly to do with stereotyped views that women can’t play sport, or that they shouldn’t because they’ll get too sweaty and it’s unfeminine, or that they are discriminated against
How does age affect participation?
The level of participation in sport generally decreases with age (77% of 16-19 year olds and just 30% of 70+ - if you discount walking it falls to 14% for 70+)
How does disability affect participation?
Fewer people with disabilities take part in sports.
Mainly due to lack of facilities, resources, teams or cost of the equipment required to take part
How does ethnicity/race/religion affect participation?
People from ethnic minority backgrounds are less likely to participate in sport, especially women.
This could be due to racism, their culture not allowing them, religion preventing them from taking part on certain days, or the clothes they have to wear making it harder.
How does socio-economic group affect participation?
If you are from a low socio-economic background you are less likely to participate as you can’t afford to play some sports

How can environment/climate affect your participation in sport?
If the weather is too hot or too cold it could affect what sports you can do, e.g. if it’s too hot you won’t want to run a marathon as you’ll get dehydrated, if its too cold you will need to wear lots of layers
