Group 7 Flashcards
Do halogens get more or less electronegative going down the group?
Less, due to shielding.
What sort of molecules do halogens exist as?
Diatomic.
Does boiling point increase or decrease going down the group and why?
Increases, number of electrons increase as the atoms get larger, increasing the van der Waals forces that act between molecules.
Does the oxidising ability of halogens increase or decrease down the group?
Decreases, ability to gain electrons is greater at the top of the period as less shielding.
What can fluorine oxidise?
Cl, Br and I
What can chlorine oxidise?
Br and I
What can Br oxidise?
I
What colour is Cl2?
Pale green.
What colour is Br2?
Orange
What colour is I2?
Brown
Does reducing ability increase or decrease down the group?
Increase, larger the ions, the more easily it loses it’s electrons due to shielding.
Why is no precipitate seen when fluorine is reacted with acidified silver nitrate?
Forms silver fluoride which is a soluble salt.
What are the names of the two acids produced when chlorine reacts with water?
Chloric acid and hydrogen chloride.
What is the reaction for chlorine reacting with cold, dilute sodium hydroxide?
Cl2 + 2NaOH –> 2NaCl + NaOCl + H2O
What is the name for NaOCl and what is its use?
Sodium chlorate
Household bleach
