Ground Water Level: Groundwater Levels and Drainage Flashcards
1
Q
What is the phreatic level?
A
The phreatic level (or groundwater table) is the depth at which soil pores are completely saturated with water.
2
Q
What is the capillary fringe?
A
The capillary fringe is the zone above the groundwater table where water is drawn upward by capillary action.
3
Q
What factors affect groundwater seepage?
A
- Soil permeability (higher permeability = faster seepage).
- Hydraulic gradient (difference in water pressure).
- Drainage conditions (open vs. closed systems).
4
Q
How does groundwater affect dikes and embankments?
A
High groundwater pressure can cause erosion, piping, and seepage, weakening dike stability.
5
Q
What are the stages of dike failure due to seepage?
A
- Observation – Water appears behind the dike but no issue.
- Wells – Water concentrated without sand movement.
- Erosion – Sand and water mixture, risk of failure.
- Severe Erosion – More than 1m³ of sand per well, possible dike collapse.
