Consolidation: Primary (Direct) Consolidation Flashcards
What is primary consolidation?
A settlement phase where water drains from soil pores under load, allowing grains to compress.
What is the Terzaghi consolidation equation?
S= Cp/1+e0H1n*(P0+ΞP/P0)
Where:
π=Settlement (m)
πΆπ= Primary compression coefficient
π0= Initial void ratio
π»= Layer thickness (m)
π0= Initial stress (kN/mΒ²)
Ξπ= Load increase (kN/mΒ²)
How does hydrodynamic pressure affect primary consolidation?
Initially, water pressure carries the load before being transferred to soil grains as drainage occurs.
How is soil stress distributed in a compression test?
The A-line represents past loading, while the C-line shows compression behavior under new loading.
