Grain, Soil and Water Pressure: Water Stress (Pore Water Pressure) Flashcards
1
Q
What is pore water pressure (U or σw)?
A
It is the pressure exerted by water in soil pores, calculated as:
σw = h × γwater
Where γwater = 10 kN/m³ (for fresh water).
2
Q
What happens when pore water pressure increases?
A
Effective stress decreases.
Soil becomes weaker and prone to failure.
3
Q
What is hydrostatic water pressure?
A
The pressure exerted by stationary water, increasing linearly with depth.
