Grimes Flashcards
do plants use k/r selection
no
grime theory
how plants succeed in environments
3 categories of grimes
stress tolerators, competitors, ruderals
stress tolerator
high stress low disturbance, small/perennial plants, invest energy to resources
stress habitats
salt marsh, poor resources, low competition as less plants
competitors
low stress/disturbance, perennials/fast growing plants, neighbouring plants use same resources
competitor habitats
lots of resources, rainforest
ruderals
high disturbance, low stress, short lifespan
ruderal habitats
pavements, dunes
primary succession environments
lava/volcanic islands, exposed rock/inital rock (pavements)
initial rock/exposed rock
pavements/sand etc are harsh environments where only certain plants can live (lichens), as soon as they die soil forms and new plants move in building nutrients/shade/water
lichens
first colonisers make ecosystems, some are nitrogen fixing, help break down rock
intermediate stage
after initial stage, more plants grow, sand dunes
climax community
last community, most biomass possible, usually not achieved
what does every environment contain
ruderals/early colonisers
