Carbon cycle Flashcards
carbon fix
carbon that is stored by photosynthesis , in plant bodies/soil until bodies decompose and release to atmosphere
sink
a store of carbon that removes from atmosphere (peat bogs)
source
source of carbon, fossil fuels
soil and carbon
contains lots of carbon, if exposed to oxygen can release it
how else is carbon released
respiration
oceans and carbon
source/sink, absorbs co2 as carbonic acid (acidity increases as more carbonic acid), as temp increases it becomes less efficient absorbing carbon, oceans release less co2 than absorb as photosynthesis
impacts of increased acidity
corrosive to calcium carbonate shells, coral bleaching, less coral reefs built, fish impacted as less mussels for food
carbon fixes in ocean
organisms grab co2 then algae perish and sink and stored which creates off balance and causes atmosphere to store more carbon
geological
chemical weathering of silicate rocks/carbonate rocks draws co2 from atmosphere, weathering makes bicarbonate ions which move to ocean and are taken up by organisms (equilibrium)
plants
fractionate (prefer) c12 carbon isotopes, more likely to use c12 than c13 meaning more c12 is in atmosphere as fossil fuels are being burnt
impacts from humans
100 times worse than natural as deforestation/fossil fuels
how to fix it
stop burning fossil fuels, or accelerate co2 storage
