Ecosystem services Flashcards
ecosystem services
benefits people get from ecosystems (food/water/spiritual)
natural capital
natural resources (soil/fossils)
natures contribution to people
deals with all contributions not just positive, doesnt focus on monetary value, involves indigenous value
wetland example
where water covers soil, services include flood resilience/biodiversity
woodlands example
group of trees in a forest, services include carbon storage/biodiversity
urban trees example
trees in urban areas, services include oxygen production/carbon storage
grasslands example
area of grass, services include grazing for animals/wild food/medicine
monetary value
can be useful to put value on nature and help sell ideas about conservation/poicies but gov tries to put value on it
natural flood management
flooding increasing in uk due to climate change, using leaky dams can help prevent
ecosystem change, biodiversity
decline in biodiversity, need to address biodiversity or future generations wont benefit from ecosytem services
REDD+
pays countries to keep ecosystems intact/store carbon/not to deforest but pandemic hit and value of stored carbon decreased, where does the money go? and trees/forests arent always store of carbon (fires/droughts), measuring carbon storage can be hard as you need to measure every tree
positives of REDD+
article 6 recently signed at cop26 allows one country to pay another to offset carbon
