Greenhouse effect Flashcards
where are greenhouse gases found
troposphere
how does earth stay in balance
short wave from sun, long wave re-radiated
whats greenhouse effect
short wave comes in from sun, long wave gets radiated to space, some gets absorbed by gases and warms planet
natural greenhouse effect
essential for life, if no greenhouse effect then planet would be cold, methane/co2/water vapour
what gases absorb radiation
water vapour, co2, methane
why don’t nitrogen/oxygen absorb radiation
as they have a double bond meaning their stable so dont need to hold onto radiation
average surface temperature
15c
where do majority of co2 emissions come from
coal/oil/gas, fossil fuels
why is human caused greenhouse effect bad
causes global warming
impacts of global warming
sea level rise, ocean acidification, precipitation
sea level rise
water absorbs radiation which increases temperature and causes thermal expansion (ocean expands), causing flooding
ocean acidification
increase of acidity in oceans due to co2 rise, lowers pH, coral bleaching/corrosive to calcium carbonate shells
precipitation
more heat in atmosphere means more evaporation so more precipitation/intensity of wind
wet/dry areas
wet gets wetter, dry gets drier
