Grant Et Al. Flashcards
Aim:
-to test for context-dependency caused by the presence or absence of noise during learning and retrieval of meaningful material
Pps:
-39 pps between ages of 17-56 (23 males, 17 females) -opportunity sample -8 psychology students acted as experiments and each found 5 acquaintances to join -1 result was excluded
Procedure in phase 1:
- read article on psycho immunology- allowed to highlight
- all wore headphones whilst reading
- loud noise= university Cafeteria- no talking just dishes- told to ignore noise
How long was the break between phase 1 and 2, why did they have a break?
-2 min break between phases- this minimised simple recall from short term memory
Phase 2 procedure:
- tested on recall
- all wore headphones
- first 10 short answer questions
- second, multiple choice 16 questions
Pps debriefed at the end
Whole procedure lasted 30 mins
Short answer results:
Study
Silent. Noisy
Test
Silent 6.7. 5.4
Noisy 4.6. 6.2
Multiple choice results:
Study
Silent. Noisy
Test
Silent 14.3. 12.7
Noisy 12.7. 14.3
Conclusions:
- noise doesn’t affect capacity to study
- context dependency affects retrieval in both SA and MC questions, shouldn’t -study in quiet surroundings to match exam silence
