Blakemore And Cooper✅ Flashcards
Aim:
To test whether kittens raised in an environment of vertical/ horizontal stripes would affect their ability to develop normal vision.
What time of experiment?
Lab
How long were kittens kept in darkness for when the were birthed?
2 weeks old/ until they were 2 weeks old
What were the dimensions of the cylinder?
46cm diameter and 2m long
At what height what the Perspex floor in the cylinder?
1m (half way)
Description of cylinder interior:
High contrast black and white stripes with Perspex floor so they could see below them
What did they do to ensure the kittens couldn’t look up?
Put a cone around their necks (blocking vision)
2 controls:
All kittens spent same time in apparatus (5 hours)
When not in the cylinder, they were all in darkness.
IV:
Horizontal/ vertical stripes
DV: name (4)
- visual reactions
- ability to move
- visual placement
- startle response
Results for temporary issues (3):
- move by touch not sight
- failed to move paws when brought close to table
- no startle response
Usually lasted for 10 hours
Results: permanent issues(3)
- bumped into stationary objects
- jerky head movements
- poor judgment on movements
Conclusions:
- changes in neurons in visual cortex (brain learnt to live in horizontal / vertical world).
- difference in horizontal/ vertical is that neurons changed preferred orientation according to picture (see notes for diagrams)
