Gram (-) Rods Flashcards
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, grows on MacConkey, lactose fermenting, and tests negative for citrate, urease, and oxidase
E. coli
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, grows on MacConkey, lactose fermenting, and citrate negative but urease positive
Enterobacter aerogenes
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, grows on MacConkey lactose fermenting, and citrate positive and urease positive
Klebsiella
How does one distinguish between Klebsiella pneumonia and Klebsiella granulomatis?
K. pneumoniae: alcoholics, causes pneumonia and UTI
K. granulomatis: donovan bodies, std, granuloma inguinaie
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, grows on MacConkey, is lactose non-fermenting, and oxidase positive
Psuedomonas aeruginosa
What is unique about Pseudomonas aeruginosa? What disease does it cause?
green colonies, grape-like smell; pulmonary, septicemia, eye and ear infections
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, grows on MacConkey, is lactose non-fermenting, and oxidase negative. It is urease positive and is known for its “swarming” motility.
Proteus
What disease does proteus cause?
UTI, kidney stones
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, grows on MacConkey, is lactose non-fermenting, and oxidase negative. It is motile, citrate positive, H2S positive, and is spread fecal-orally
Salmonella enterica
What disease does Salmonella enterica cause?
diarrhea, enteric fever
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, grows on MacConkey, is lactose non-fermenting, and oxidase negative. It is non-motile and can be characterized by 5 F’s: food, feces, flies, fingers, and fomites
Shigella
What disease does shigella cause?
shigellosis - shiga toxin, fever, cramps, diarrhea, dysentery
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, doesn’t grow on MacConkey, and is seen with patients with damaged heart valves. It can cause septic arthritis in patients
HACEK species
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, doesn’t grow on MacConkey, needs X and Y factors, is oxidase positive, and is known for its satellite phenomenon
Haemophillus Influenzae
What disease does H. flu cause?
CAPSULE: meningitis, cellulitis, epiglottis
NO CAPSULE: otitis media, sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, doesn’t grow on MacConkey, but does grow on regan-lowe charcoal agar. It is important to use dacron swabs with this bacterium. It spreads through aerosol transmission.
Bordatella pertussis
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, doesn’t grow on MacConkey, is found in ticks, is slow growing, and cross reacts with Brucella. It is considered a bioterrorism bacterium.
Francisella tularenis
What disease does Francisella tularenis cause?
TULAREMIA: ulceroglandular, oculoglandular, pneumonia
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, doesn’t grow on MacConkey, and comes from unpasteurized milk and cheese. It is considered a bioterrorism bacterium.
Brucella
What disease does Brucella cause?
Brucellosis (undulant fever) - lives and replicates in macrophages
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, doesn’t grow on MacConkey, is clean waterborne, survives in macrophages, and grows on BYCE agar with cysteine
Legionella pneumophillia
What disease does Legionella pneumophillia cause?
legonnaires disease (pneumonia); pontiac fever (flu-like)
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, doesn’t grow on MacConkey, is considered a zoonotic disease and found in fleas
Yersinia pestis
What disease does Yersnia pestis cause?
bubonic plague
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, doesn’t grow on MacConkey, is considered a zoonotic disease and found in rats
Streptobacillus moniliformis
What disease does streptobacillus moniliformis cause?
rate bite fever
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, doesn’t grow on MacConkey, is considered a zoonotic disease and found in cats
Bartonella henselae
What disease does Bartonella henselae cause?
cat scratch fever, bacilliary angiomatosis -> skin lesions in IC people
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, doesn’t grow on MacConkey, is considered a zoonotic disease and found in lice
Bartonella quintana
What disease does Bartonella quintana cause?
trench fever - fever, pain in long bones
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, doesn’t grow on MacConkey, is considered a zoonotic disease and found in sand flies
Bartonella bacilliformis
What disease does bartonella bacilliformis cause?
carrion’s disease - rbcs are attacked -> anemia, muscle and joint pain
This Gram (-) rod is aerobic, doesn’t grow on MacConkey, is considered a zoonotic disease and found in domestic pets
Pasturella multocida
What disease does pasutrella multocida cause?
local cellulitis
These two Gram (-) rod are anaerobic
Bacteroids - intrabdominal abscess
Fuschiobacterium
