Goals of Fluid Therapy (ASAN002/2) Flashcards
1
Q
What are the main Goals of fluid therapy? (2)
A
- To replace lost fluid & electrolytes.
- To maintain a normal fluid & electrolyte balance in the presence of inadequate intake & ongoing losses.
2
Q
What 5 questions should be considered when formulating a fluid therapy plan? (5)
A
- Is it indicated?
- How much fluid?
- What rate?
- What route?
- What type?
3
Q
What to consider to determine if fluid therapy is indicated? (3)
A
- Clinical indications (tacky gums etc?)
- Lab data (PCV/TP, blood/biochem tests)
- patient presentation ?
4
Q
How much fluid should be given? - What to consider.. (3)
A
- Rehydration
- Maintenance
- Ongoing losses
5
Q
What is fluid rate usually dependant on? (2)
A
- Patient presentation
- Amt of fluid that can be given to rehydrate without causing fluid overload.
6
Q
Over what time period is the fluid Deficit usually replaced? (2)
A
- Deficit may be replaced over 24hr.
- Alternatively, some will be replace rapidly then the remainder at slower rate.
7
Q
How is fluid rate calculated to ensure correct administration? (2)
A
- Daily rate calculated first
- Then hourly rate.
8
Q
By what route should fluid be given?
A
- Depends on patient status
- IV administration is best if possible
(various routes are usually available to choose from)
9
Q
What do you need to consider to determine what type of fluid should be given? (2)
A
- Depends on type of deficit (ie electrolytes)
- Disease factors.
