Canine Donor Selection
When choosing a canine donor you must consider the following:\nWeight\nPCV\nVx status\nMedications\nPhysical condition\nPathology tests\nGender Preference \nDonation
Canine Donor – Weight:
Preferably > 25kg \nShould not be overweight or underweight for it’s size.\nA larger donor can donate more blood.
Canine Donor – PCV:
PCV > 40%\nEnsures donation won’t be detrimental to donor’s health & well being.
Canine Donor – Vx Status:
Must be up–to–date with all req vaccinations.\nDonor cannot be recently vaccinated (due to immunological reaction that occurs following Vx).
Canine Donor – Medications:
Some meds (e.g. AB’s, aspirin & steroids) will exclude dog from being a donor.\nDogs with medical conditions will be unable to donate.
Canine Donor – Physical Condition:
Should be in good physical condition.\nNot overweight or underweight.\nSkin & hair are clean & healthy.\nNo wounds or healing wounds present.\nShould be well socialised & behaved.
Canine Donor – Pathology tests:
Blood tests may be performed to ensure donor:\nIsn’t ‘a carrier’ of certain viruses (dependent on area).\nDoesn’t have an underlying undetected illness.\nHeartworm testing is essential in all donors.
Canine Donor – Gender Preference:
Desexed Male dogs are preferred.\nFemales that have had a litter or are pregnant shouldn’t be used as antibodies against the males blood group may have been produced.\nEven if female has been desexed after having litter, she should not be used.
Canine Donor – Donation:
Maximum amt of 22mls/kg should be taken.
Feline Donor Selection
When choosing a feline donor you must consider the following:\nWeight\nPCV\nVx status\nMedications\nPhysical condition\nPathology tests\nGender Preference\nDonation
Feline Donor – Weight:
Should be around 5kg\nNot overweight or underweight for their size.\nThis weight is considered acceptable due to the volume of blood being donated.
Feline Donor – PCV:
PCV > 30%\nEnsures the donation will not be detrimental to donor’s health & well being.
Feline Donor – Vx status:
Must be up–to–date with all req vaccinations.\nDonor cannot be recently vaccinated (due to immunological reaction that occurs following Vx)
Feline Donor – Medications:
