GMC - Section 3 Flashcards
What is the ground frequency?
121.805
What is the spare frequency available to Ground?
134.230
According to MATS 1, when can the ASMGCS be used and what for?
MACDCLE
Monitor, Advice/Assistance, Clear, Departing, Commenced, Lights, Emergency
When traffic on the aerodrome cannot be adequately seen from the Tower during periods of low visibility or during the hours of darkness to
- Monitor the movements of aircraft and vehicles on the manoeuvring area;
- Provide advice and assistance for the safe and efficient movement of aircraft and vehicles on the manoeuvring area
- Determine that a runway is clear of aircraft and vehicles
- Ensure that departing aircraft are lined up on the correct runway
- Ascertain that aircraft have commenced take-off run
- Facilitate switching of taxiway lighting
- Monitor and assist emergency service vehicles when required
What are the MATS 1 methods of establishing SMR identification?
VAMRP
Visually, Another Source, Manoeuvre, Reported Position, Position on Situation Display
By Correlating
- Visually observed aircraft/vehicle position
- An identified SMR position from another ATS source
- An SMR position complying with an ATC instruction for a specified manoeuvre
- Aircraft/vehicle position report
- A known aircraft/vehicle position, e.g. entering a runway or taxiway, holding position or any position marked on the situation display
Who’s responsibility is it to check the code/callsign pairing of inbound and outbound aircraft?
Inbound - AIR
Outbound - GMC as soon as is practicable after commencement of pushback
For inbound aircraft, what is the easiest way to validate code/callsign pairing?
By recognising a pairing previously observed on the ATM.
When is the AGL required to be on?
- Official night
- The IRVR is less than 1500m
- LVPs are in force
- Whenever snow covers the manoeuvring area
- During Northern Runway operations
Which is the main source of information on aircraft, EFPS or ASMGCS?
EFPS
What is ASMGCS and what are the two systems that make it up?
ASMGCS - Aircraft Surface Movement Ground Control System
Containing MDS and SMR.
- SMR - Surface movement radar, which is a primary return.
- MDS - Multistatic dependent surveillance, secondary return using a transponder
Are ATC allowed to clear an aicraft onto a stand showing occupied, if it is visibly clear?
No. There may be issues that ATC are unaware of. Apron must be consulted.
Which aircraft manoeuvres require prior permission from Airfield Operations?
- Park nose out on a stand
- Reverse under own power from a nose-in stand
- Taxi off a stand unless specified
- 180 degree turns on Taxiways
When parked nose out, which aircraft are allowed to taxi off under their own power without assistance or permission?
- Pier served stands
Propeller driven aircraft ATR size or smaller - Remote stands
Propeller driven aircraft F27 size or smaller
Jet aircraft G4 size or smaller
When operating in Stand Mode, what are the maximum size of aircraft that can park on 41/42/43?
41 - Code E
42 - Code D
43 - Code E
OR
41E/W - Code C
42 - Unavailable
43E/W - Code C
When operating in Mixed mode what special consideration needs to be given to aircraft taxiing off 41M and 43M?
Any aircraft larger than Code C must be given a route which avoids them directing jet blast onto stand 42.
Describe Stand Mode on 41/43?
Barriers block access to/from taxiway Lima.
Lima East crossing opens and is controlled.
Aircraft will pull onto stand from Kilo and be pushed back onto Kilo.
Ops can remove the barriers on Lima to allow the aircraft to taxi forward onto Lima.
What is Mixed Mode on 41/43
When 41/43 are used in ‘Stand Mode’ and ‘Drive Through Mode’ independently.
What is Drive Through Mode on 41/43?
Stand 42M and the Lima East crossing are both closed and barriered. ATC are responsible for allocating the stands where necessary.
What are the options for remote holding and name the stands?
- Zulu and Alpha-November between Mike and Whiskey
- 41/43 E/M/W
- 130s (132 and 133)
- 140s (141R, 142R, 143L, 144L)
- 170s (171L, 173L and 175L)
- 230s (230L, 231L, 232L, 233L)
What is the maximum size aircraft that can remote hold?
- Code E on 41/43
- Code C on all others
What restriction is associated with remote hold manoeuvring and jet blast?
Only one aircraft may move on/off a remote stand area at a time, due to jet blast.
41/43 are considered separate.
What phrase must be used for aircraft parking on a remote stand that requires a marshaller?
“Park on stand (number) following marshaller instructions”
Can taxi clearance be given to an aircraft on a marshalled remote stand if an aircraft is moving onto a remote stand in the same area and why?
No, because of jetblast effects.
What are the rules associated with remote holding on 41/43?
For All Aircraft
* Aircraft may face either north or south, irrespective of the orientation of any other aircraft on those stands.
* Aircraft facing south on 41E can only exit onto Kilo westbound due to the proximity of the grass area 23b (between KA and 41E)
Taxiing Aircraft
* A marshaller is required when positioning onto East/West positions when the AGL is required.
Pushing or Towing Aircraft
* Communications will be with the flight deck using aircraft flight call sign.
* For aircraft pushing back only, the instruction must be for the complete route in one transmission.
* Push/Tow is not available whenever the AGL is required.
* Push onto East/West positions is not available at any time.
* Tow onto East/West positions from taxiway Lima is not available at any time.
When is a marshaller required for remote holding?
For 140s/170s/230s
* A marshaller is required to enter the stand. Aircraft may self-manoeuvre to exit
For 41/43
* A marshaller is only required when positioning onto East/West positions when AGL is required
What are the 170 remote stands?
171L, 173L and 175L
What are the 230 remote stands?
230L, 231L, 232L and 233L
What are the 140 remote stands?
141R, 142R, 143L and 144L
Can an aircraft be routed via Whiskey after a push from 1/2/3 into Z/AN facing east?
Not until the flight crew report that their ground crew have detached and vacated taxiway Whiskey.
Can an aircraft be pushed non-standard onto V to face east between M and W?
No.
When aircraft are pushed back from stands 18-28 to face north on Juliet, what must be considered when they begin taxi?
Jet blast effects
What size aircraft are required to complete the non-standard pushback from 13M to face south on KA?
Code D size and larger.
What length of aircraft pushing back from stand 15 prevents access to stand 15 and 31 L/M/R after pushback?
55m (B764)
Which aircraft are only able to accept the standard pushback from stands 25/27 and what could 25 do instead?
A330/A340/A350
Airbus Heavy
25 could push into 43M
Which aircraft requires a different pushback on 33M?
A346. Standard push is face west on Kilo abeam 32M.
What wingspan of aircraft cannot be pushed back far enough from 36M to allow another aircraft onto 36M?
> 61M (Bigger than B772)
Can an aircraft taxi onto 37/38 when an aircraft has pushed back from 37/38 and why?
No, because there is insufficient room for aircraft to park on 37/38 after something has pushed from 37/38.
Which aircraft require a dog-leg pushback from stands 572/573/574 and 64 and which stands will they infringe?
Aircraft of B763 size or smaller will require a dogleg pushback manoeuvre that will infringe the access to Stands 570/571 and 65 L/M/R.
How will aircraft larger than B763 be pushed from stand 573 and 64?
Face north on Quebec-Alpha abeam stand 560.
For 573
If 64 is unoccupied, ATC may ask if the ground crew are able push straight back into 64, and then pull forward onto Quebec Alpha facing south, abeam Stand 571.
