Define Glycemic Load
Glycemic Load measures the blood glucose raising potential of a portion of food that contains carbohydrates. It takes into account the amount of carbohydrates in a portion of food along with how quickly it raises blood glucose levels
How to work out a Glycemic Load
(Glycemic Index x carbohydrate content in portion) / 100
What is the number for a low GI food
55 or less
What is the number for a medium GI food
59 to 69
What is the number for a high GI food
70 or higher
What is the number for a low Glycemic load
10 or less
What is the number for a medium glycemic load
11 to 19
What is the number for a high glycemic load
20 or higher
Compare glycemic load and glycemic index
Glycemic Index measure how quickly a carbohydrate turns in sugar. Glycemic Load measures the impact on the body’s blood sugar levels and takes portion size into account. GL is a more accurate representation
