Global Resource Consumption and Security ch3 Flashcards
Resource Stewardship
circular economy
Preserves natural capacity, optimizes resouce use and reduces loss through managing finite storage and renewable flows
potential
having or showing the capacity to become or develop into something in the future
carrying capacity
amount of population able to live and sustain in an environment
optimum population
number of people, when working with all available resources, will produce highest per-capita economic return
overpopulation
too many people to maintain an adequate standard of living, relative to resources and technology locally available
underpopulation
too many resources in an area that can be used by the people living there
resource stewardship
suggests humans can use resources in a way that they will be available to future generations (environmental sustainability and social equity)
tragedy of the commons
Tragedy of the commons phrase used to explain lack of control over how common resources are used and selfish acts destroy resource for others
“Tragedy” is that other contries feel compelled to increase resource gain to match the scale of country that started the increase in the first place
Results in the rate of use exceeding maximum sustainable
