Q

what is food waste

A

In HICs consumerism, excess wealth and mass marketing leads to waste, ⅓ of food is thrown away in UK each year. In LICs up to 80% is wasted before reaching markets or shops. Better transport, more efficient farming practices and storage and processing facilities ensure bigger amount reaches markets and consumers

Q

what is in virto meat

A

Extremely expensive to produce
Two months of in vitro meat production could deliver up to 50,000 tonnes of meat from 10 pork muscle cells
Benefits of cultured meat
More efficient and environmental friendly, less land needed for agriculture
Reduces energy needs of meat generation by up to 45% and requiring 2% of the land the industry requires
18% of greenhouse gasses comes from cows, in vitro meat would completely eliminate this

Q

what is vertical farming

A

Vertical farms aim to grow year-round in high rise urban buildings, reducing need for the carbon-emitting transport of fruits and vegetables
Could also make food supplies also more secure because production can continue in extreme weather
Needs no herbicides or insecticides

Q

what is genetically modified food

A

Gm technology helped farmers to increase yields by protecting crops against pests and weeds
Genetic engineering involves adding traits to a plant to make it more nutritious or more resistant to disease or pesticides

Q

what is prevention and treatment of disease

A

Approaches to disease treatment are preventative methods like primary health care, which are costly but show the point that technology exists to find solution as long as rich companies help out poorer ones
