Q

What is pill induced esophagitis?

A

typically occurs in older patients with decreased saliva. However, it can occur in anybody with decrease esophageal motility. The pill gets stuck in the esophagus and delivers toxic concentrations of drug to that area.

Q

What are two important molecules involved in drug absorption and metabolism? What are their roles?

A

P-gp/MDR1: Transports drugs across membranes

CYP3A:metabolizes drugs

17
Q

What effects can gastric targeted drugs have on concurrent drug therapy?

A
  1. Decreased pH in stomach can alter drug absorption
  2. antacids can chelate other drugs (antimicrobials such as Doxycycline, tetracycline, flouroquinolones)
  3. PPIs and H2 inhibitors may alter CYP metabolism.
