A
Pull H2O in and produce more solid stools. They are bulk forming agents (group 1 laxatives)

What kind of anti-diarrheal is Bismuth subsalicylate?
A
“Absorber in the lumen”

How does Bismuth subsalicylate work?
A
Absorbs bacteria/virus/toxin. Useful for travelers diarrhea & H. pylori

How do the opiates work?
A
- Decrease salivary/gastric/intestinal secretion; GI motility; cramps
- Increase: GI muscle tone; sphincter tone
- Anti-spasmodic
- Leads to increased contact time b/w luminal material & reabsorptive surface

Whats the only opiate on the CDL? MOA?
A
Loperamide (Imodium): agonizes intestinal opiod receptors (enkephalins) & antagonize calmodulin

What other agent besides opiates alters gut motility and can be used to treat diarrhea?
A
Anti-cholinergics. Propantheline & Dicyclomine are on Garrett’s thing but neither are on the CDL
