Germicides Flashcards
Phenols
Denature and coagulate cellular proteins, dissolve lipids, and/or oxidize surfaces with the end result of killing/reducing microbes
Triclosan
Chlorinated phenol that inhibits FA synthesis, is non- irritating but the long term effects are yet unknown
- present in antibacterial soaps
Alcohols
Dissolve lipids, denature proteins, and are non toxic and non irritating
- lack true sterility and can be inactivated by organic matter
Heavy Metals
Bind to cellular proteins inactivating enzymes
Selenium
Antifungal properties
Zinc
used in mouthwashes
Silver
Used in burn ointments
Halogens
Denature proteins
Chlorine:
Kills microbes but is unstable in the environment and inactivated by organic matter
Iodine
Less toxic than chlorine and more stable
Chlorhexidine
Disrupts membranes and denatures proteins, but has a low toxicity and is used to coat medical devices
Quats
detergents made of 4 organic groups bound to a nitrogen atom, with low toxicity
Alkalating Agents
Denature proteins and NA, used to sterilize things with prolonged exposure
Glutaraldehyde
Alkalating agent that works well in the presence of organic materials
Ethylene/Propylene Oxide
Alkalating agent - highly toxic gas used to access hard to reach places
