Antibiotics Flashcards
Quinolones
inactivate DNA gyrase preventing super coiling which also prevents DNA replication
Rifampin
Binds to RNA polymerase preventing mRNA synthesis
Sulfamide (Sulfa drugs)
Bind in place of PABA acting as a competitive inhibitor, disrupting folic acid synthesis
Polymyxin B
Poor selective toxicity, used in ointments
Binds to phospholipids compromising membrane integrity and function
Beta Lactams
Interfere with an enzyme required for PG synthesis resulting in cell lysis
Non-beta Lactams
Interfere at various steps in PG synthesis
Includes Cycloserine, Bacitracin, Vancomycin
Sulfonamide + Trimethoprim
Antibiotic cocktail with a broader spectrum and reduced toxicity because it works on two points of the same pathway (reduces chances of resistance)
