Acquired Immunity - Humeral Flashcards
Humeral Immunity
Characterized by discrimination, diversity, and memory with the production of antibodies by B cells in response to antigens
Epitope
Part of bacteria that antibodies bind to
Production of Antibodies
circulating B cells encounter an antigen and respond by dividing and differentiating into memory cells and plasma cells which produce antibodies
IgG
Main antibody found in circulation, able to cross the placenta
IgA
Mainly found in secretions, protects mucuosal tissues
IgM
forms large complexes with antigens that are easily removed
IgD
Has no clear function
IgE
Involved in allergy development
Antibody Antigen Binding Process
Agglutinaton, Opsonization, Neutralization, and Strengthening of the immune system by triggering release of complements
Agglutination
Antibodies bind to antigen epitopes
Opsonization
antigen is coated with antibodies and is engulfed by phagocytes
Neutralization
antigen is blocked from action by antibodies
Strengthening of Immune Response
triggers release of complements
