NITROFURANTOIN: Nursing Considerations
- Take with food or milk
- Two daily doses if urine output is high or patient has diabetes
- Drug may turn urine rust-yellow to brown
- May cause false positive glucose in urine
- Do not break, crush, chew, or open tablets or capsules
- Rx; Preg Cat B
NITROFURANTOIN: Side Effects
- Dizziness, headache
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Tooth staining
- Chills, confusion
- Rash, pruritus
- Chest pain
- Hepatitis
- Pancreatitis
- Anemia
- Cough, dyspnea
NITROFURANTOIN: Purpose
Treatment of urinary tract infection
PHENAZOPYRIDINE: Nursing Considerations
- Do not crush tablets; can take with food or milk to decrease GI upset
- Inform patient that urine will be bright orange/red
- Monitor for signs of hepatoxicity: dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, itching, abdominal pain, fever, diarrhea
- May interfere with urine glucose tests
- OTC, Rx; Preg Cat B
PHENAZOPYRIDINE: Side Effects
- GI upset
- Kidney and liver toxicity
- Rash
- Headache, vertigo
PHENAZOPYRIDINE: Purpose
Treatment of urinary tract irritation (often in combination with urinary anti-infective )
FINASTERIDE: Nursing Considerations
- May be taken without regard to food
- Pregnant women should avoid contact with crushed drug or patient’s semen; may adversely affect developing male fetus
- Full therapeutic effect: Propecia may require 3 months, Proscar may require 6–12 months
- Not for use in women and children
- Rx; Preg Cat X
FINASTERIDE: Side Effects
- Decreased libido
- Decreased volume of ejaculate
- Testicular pain
- Impotence
- Breast tenderness and enlargement
- Decreased PSA levels
FINASTERIDE: Purpose
Treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (Proscar) and male pattern baldness (Propecia)
VARDENAFIL: Nursing Considerations
- Take 1 hour before sexual activity
- Contact provider if erection lasts over 4 hours
- Stop medication if hearing or visual disturbances occur
- Never use with nitrates; could have fatal fall in BP
- Does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases
- Rx; Preg Cat B
VARDENAFIL: Side Effects
- Headache, dizziness
- Nasal congestion
- Flushing
- Dyspepsia, GERD
- Tinnitus, hearing loss
- Hypertension, chest pain
- Photophobia
- Arthralgia
- Sinusitis

Treatment of erectile dysfunction
TADALAFIL: Nursing Considerations
- Take 1 hour before sexual activity
- Take at same time each day for BPH
- Patients with severe hepatic impairment should not take
- Alert provider if erection lasts more than 4 hours
- Stop medication if hearing or visual disturbances occur
- Alcohol intake may increase orthostatic symptoms
- Never use with nitrates; could have fatal fall in BP
- Does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases
- Rx

- Back pain
- Tinnitus, hearing loss
- Nasal congestion
- Dizziness
- Hypotension

TADALAFIL: Purpose
Treatment of erectile dysfunction and benign prostatic hyperplasia
SILDENAFIL CITRATE: Nursing Considerations
- Take approximately 1 hour before sexual activity
- Do not use more than once a day
- Tablets may be split
- High-fat meal will reduce absorption; better absorption on empty stomach
- Never use with nitrates; could have fatal fall in blood pressure
- Notify provider if erection lasts longer than 4 hours
- Stop medication if hearing or visual disturbances occur
- Does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases

Treatment of overactive bladder and urinary incontinence
OXYBUTYNIN: Nursing Considerations
- Take without regard to meals
- Avoid alcohol, CNS depressants
- Avoid activities requiring alertness until med response is known
- Decreased ability to perspire; avoid strenuous activity in warm weather
- Rx, OTC; Preg Cat B

- Anxiety, restlessness
- Dizziness
- Seizures
- Palpitations, tachycardia
- Drowsiness, blurred vision
- Nausea, vomiting
- Anorexia
- Dry mouth
- Constipation
- Hypertension
- Impotence
- Angioedema
OXYBUTYNIN: Purpose
Antispasmodic for neurogenic bladder and overactive bladder in females
TAMSULOSIN: Nursing Considerations
- Take the same time daily, once a day, 30 minutes after a meal
- Avoid changing positions (lying, sitting, standing) rapidly
- Use caution in potentially hazardous activities
- This medication should be stopped prior to cataract surgery; may cause floppy iris syndrome
- Do not crush, break, or chew capsules
- Rx; Preg Cat B
TAMSULOSIN: Side Effects
- Insomnia
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Blurred vision
- Abnormal ejaculation, priapism
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Increased cough
- Chest pain, orthostatic hypertension
- Floppy iris syndrome
